Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) Program is built on three core pillars: Forest Management, Fiber Sourcing, and Chain of Custody.

SFI is a leading sustainability initiative in the forestry sector, promoting responsible forest management through collaboration, partnerships, and science-based practices that benefit the environment, communities, and future generations.

Today’s environment is filled with intense scrutiny but being competitive means never standing still.

QCI Global helps you see a way forward so you can advance confidently.

What Is It?

SFI encourages stakeholder collaboration and knowledge sharing to support long-term forest health, biodiversity, and sustainable land use.

The SFI Standard includes rigorous requirements that ensure participants comply with all relevant laws, regulations, and industry best practices, promoting accountability and continual improvement in forestry operations.

The SFI 2015-2019 Forest Management Standard is a comprehensive set of requirements that promote sustainable forestry practices. It is designed to ensure the responsible management of forestlands and includes 13 Principles, 15 Objectives, 37 Performance Measures, and 101 Indicators.

The SFI 2015-2019 Fiber Sourcing Standard is another component of the SFI Program that promotes responsible forestry practices. It provides guidelines for organizations with fiber sourcing programs that acquire round wood, residual chips, pulp, and veneer to support forest products facilities. The standard is based on 14 Principles, 13 Objectives, 21 Performance Measures, and 55 Indicators.

Appendix 1: Rules for use of SFI Certified sourcing label This standard allows companies to use the certified sourcing label on product. This label confirms that raw material sourced from the following sources:

  • Fiber that conforms with the SFI 2015-2019 Fiber Sourcing
  • Standard and/or,
  • Pre-Consumer Recycled Content and/or,
  • Post-consumer recycled content and/or,
  • Certified forest content and/or, Non-controversial sources.

Chain of Custody (CoC) is an essential component of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) program. It is an accounting system that allows companies to track the flow of wood fiber from certified sources through various stages of production, processing, and distribution.

Consumer demand for environmentally responsible products is increasing, and many consumers want assurance that the wood, paper, and packaging products they purchase come from certified and responsibly managed sources.
